Emma made me play :)

Dear Jessie and Mark,
This is a long email as you will find.  I hope you enjoy it.  I love you both!

9:24 pm

What happened to August??  Good day today, finished what we needed to before closing the month tonight.  Looking forward to seeing how the numbers end up for the month.  It should be a good one.

I started the day with scripture study in the morning after Abbie left for seminary.  I like it when I can study in the morning; it makes the rest of the day go better.  I'm thinking about watchmen on the tower and what that means.  I realized today that the watchmen are warning us.  They don't exist to frighten off the enemy.  As we are warned, we need to heed that warning and spread that warning to our neighbors.  We are more effective when our neighbors receive that warning and we stand together shoulder to shoulder.  If I fail to warn my neighbor, I may suffer because I need his help to overcome whatever challenge is before me.  As I write that, it seems so obvious, but I think I understand it in a new way.

The weather was much cooler today than it has been.  The kids asked if we could have FHE outside, so we did.  Poor Jessie was freezing and wore a jacket with hood.  By the end, all the kids were cold so we came in for dessert and hymn history.  I was family story and found a letter Julie and I wrote exactly 22 years and one day ago.  It was written in Book of Mormon style while we lived in Phoenix and was fun to read.  I'll paste it below for memories.

After FHE we came upstairs and found eight garbage can liners lying in the hallway.  The old garbages were taken out, but the new liners had not been put in.  That was Camilla's responsibility; when I asked her about it, she indignantly informed me that she wanted to put the liners in but Emma made her play instead.

I am far too tired to stay awake any longer than necessary.

Thankful: The weather today was quite nice, and it was nice to sit outside.  I also loved my roast beef sandwich on homemade bread with crock pot carrots and fresh tomato for lunch.  Yummy!

Ministering: I'm afraid other than trying to be a good boss today I didn't do much ministering.

More later…

And now it came to pass that I awoke on this day, being the thirtieth day of the eighth month, one thousand nine hundred ninety and eight years since the coming of our Lord, and it did occur to me that this day also marks the completion of the second month of my marriage to Julie, a most fair and delightsome young woman, and my heart did feel to give thanks and praise to my God for the marvelous blessings He does bestow on His children.  And now, I also did feel to send greetings by way of an epistle to my fellow brethren and sisters.

Behold, on the day known as Wednesday the 19th, I did attend an exercise of "Team Building" with those with whom I work, and we did undertake much merriment and frivolity with the goal of becoming a stronger team in the sight of those for whom we work.  And those for whom we work did support and pay for this day of Team Building, for which we were glad.  And we did go to a place of eating and did eat, and great was our fullness upon leaving.

And it came to pass that we did divide into three groups of eight and did wander for the space of many hours in the urban wilderness of Phoenix, observing items of curious workmanship and making engravings upon paper of Kodak that these items might be shown to others, and that we might win the prize offered to the team which did complete this task.

And now behold, I would that ye should know that after the great wandering in the heat of the day – in which we were all sorely afflicted, but not unduly afflicted because of the many excellent rooms that had been prepared with air conditioning in the which we did rest frequently – that we did find a great and enormous house of BOB.  Now, there are those who refer to this great house by the longer name of "Bank One Ballpark", but this name is not pleasing unto me, therefore I shall refer to it as BOB from this time out.  And in this house there were many people who did gather to behold a spectacle known as baseball, between two opposing forces known as Diamondbacks and Phillies.  And the Phillies had come from afar, crossing many lands and waters and rivers and hills, yea, they did hiss forth from the ends of the earth as it were, but none were weary among them, neither were the girdles of their loins loosed; but they did come in the belly of a great fish that did roar as a lion, and their wheels were like a whirlwind.  And these visitors from afar did proceed to play in their might and did beat the Diamondbacks, in the which there was some sorrow and lamentation; but behold, this lamentation was not exceedingly great, for behold the contest was interesting to behold, and the residents of this land have grown accustomed to the defeat of the Diamondbacks; for behold, they do not wield the bat with great skill.  And it came to pass that after this contest, that many, yea most, of the people with whom I did travel did go to a place of wickedness where they did partake in strong drink and boast of their great strength, and many did continue in this activity until after the going down of the sun.  But behold, I did not partake in this activity, it being an abomination before God.

Now behold, on the morrow two humble servants of God did arrive at our home, and did request food for their support.  And having been warned beforehand by the calendar that these missionaries would be coming that day, we did have victuals prepared for them; and we did feed them porridge of carrots, potatoes and meat which we did roast in a pot; but behold, the meat was served sparingly, which thing is pleasing in the sight of God. And after they had eaten and were full, the missionaries did preach unto us the words of God; and Elder Lowe did recite unto us the words of King Benjamin which he did deliver to his people from the great tower, and Elder Lowe did exhort us to become as little children that we may one day return to the presence of God.

On Saturday we did arise from our beds early that our minds might be invigorated, and truly this was wise, for behold we had much to do.  And as I was caring for the vehicle which God has enabled us to acquire, in the which I did change the oil, behold, a member of our congregation did contact my wife in my absence, requesting our help in preparing the home of another with all manner of paint on the walls; for behold, the walls were shades of orange or pink or green, and were not pleasing to behold, for they did not please the eye nor gladden the heart.  And we did go to this house and did work diligently for many hours, spreading gallons of paint before we did go home.

And when we did return home, we did clean ourselves and dress in our fine twined linens that we might be suitably prepared to go to the House of the Lord, where we did participate in the ordinances of salvation on behalf of our forefathers.  For behold, the words of Malachi are being fulfilled, for truly the hearts of the fathers are being turned to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers.  And we did both seal children to fathers, and husbands to wives, and this work did bring us joy and gladness.  And it came to pass that after this period of worship in the House of the Lord, that we did meet with friends, and did go yet again to a house of eating, and verily we did eat much.  And the food was Mexican, and it was good.  And the goodness thereof was such that Julie did keep in reserve the half of her meal to take with her to work that she might partake of it there too; and also was the desire to not get sick in the house of eating great in the mind of Julie.

On the next day, we did arise early and go to a house of worship where we did partake of the sacrament, and we did remember the Lord our God, and did rejoice much in the Spirit that did abound.  And Julie did serve the children, and I did endeavor to preach the pleasing word of God.

And it came to pass that after our meetings, we did return to our house and did prepare more food, of which we did partake with new friends we have made.  Behold, their names are Mike and Amy.  And they are young, like unto us, but behold Amy is great with child, and is due to be delivered.  And after we did eat, we did play the game of Rook; and behold, we did play in our might, in the which Julie and I did beat Mike and Amy; and behold, there was no sorrow nor lamentation, and we did agree to meet together soon, that they might try to beat us.  And now, I would that ye should know that we feel blessed and fortunate to have so many friends upon whom we may call; for verily, they are all men and women of sound understanding, and they take delight in doing that which is right, and also in enjoying righteous activities which are pleasing in the sight of God.  And also, there are three new young couples who have moved into our ward, and we shall invite them over soon for food, or for merriment, according as we shall desire.

Now behold, Julie does work each day at a place of learning known as Arizona State University; and behold, she does work at Arizona State Savings and Credit Union, which is located there.  And she does work with other women there, and they do both give and receive money; and she has spoken to those with whom she works concerning Jesus Christ and the joy that comes from following his teachings.  And they are all greatly impressed by her, and delight in working with her.  And this brings us peace and satisfaction.

And it came to pass that on Tuesday, we did journey to an Institute that we might continue to feast upon the good word of God; but behold, the class had been canceled, although we did not know why.  But we shall make the journey again this Tuesday that we might meet this teacher and learn more of the Doctrine and Covenants and grow in the spirit of God.

On Wednesday, behold we did go our separate ways, in the which the Lord did watch over us and protect us that no harm or accident might come upon us.  And Julie did go to a meeting of the Primary Presidency of which she is a part; and I did go to yet another house of eating with many from my place of work.  And behold, the place of eating was exceedingly loud, and great was the loudness of our waiter.  But behold, many did find this person funny, but this was because of the quantities of alcohol that they had consumed and did continue to consume throughout the meal.  But I and my fellow Mormons did not partake of this tradition, but we did drink lemonade and did remain sober.  And the company did pay for this meal, and verily I say unto you that the bill was great, even to exceed all other bills I have seen for a meal.  For behold, there were many people present, and the majority of those present did partake of strong drink which does cost exceedingly much.  And I was grateful that the Lord has counseled us not to partake of such, for the consequences are not pleasing unto me.

On Friday, we did go to out and did behold in a house of entertainment a movie, in the which a man named Truman did live out his life.  And we did comment among ourselves that the movie was entertaining; and we were grateful that wickedness was not portrayed as happiness, nor were great sins enacted before our eyes.  And truly, this is a marvel to behold; for it was astonishing unto us that the previews for other movies were most abominable, and one dares not imagine the actual movie, for the preview is most shameful.  And we will content ourselves in the watching of movies that are pure and wholesome, most of which were made before we were born.

And now, I would speak unto you concerning the labor that I do.  For behold, there is much to do, and the time which I have to engage in this labor is not sufficient that I might accomplish all that they would have me accomplish.  And also, there is much that I yet do not know, and behold, I did make an exceedingly great mistake with one account, which did require two days to undo.  Now behold, I was frustrated to a great degree by this mistake, but those with whom I work did exercise great patience with me and did show me the error of my ways, in the which I learned much.  And it is astonishing to behold that I have worked for nearly four months at this job, and time doth pass exceedingly fast.

And now, I behold that I am out of room on this page.  And verily, I know not what more to say than I have already said.  And so I give this page to my wife, that she may write the things which are pleasing to her soul.  And I make and end.

Hi everyone.  Hope you were able to get through that.  We had lots of fun writing it.  Life here is WONDERFUL!  I started work one the 19th.  It's lots of fun. I'm meeting so many neat people and I am able to work on my Independent Study classes from the Y during my lunch break.   Today in primary we had lots of fun with all the children together so we could let the teachers go to Relief Society and Priesthood.  So after singing time we did some finger painting.  It was interesting.  Tonight we were able to go to a New Comers Fireside at the ward building.  It was great fun.  We met quite a few new couples and had fun visiting with them.  We are getting ready to leave to go play games at some friends of ours so We'll say so long.  We wish we all the best and want you to know we are thinking of you.

It can be cold at the end of August!

I took a nap

Dear Jessie and Mark,
I appreciate that the Sabbath is a day of rest, and I appreciate getting to take a nap.  But I always feel a little guilty when that nap takes more than 90 minutes.  But maybe I really need it.  Hmm.
Anyway, here is tonight's journal. I love you all and hope you have a great week!
Love,
Dad

9:39 pm

It was a nice Sunday.  I woke up early, but so did Nathaniel.  The nice thing about online meetings is that I could feed Nathaniel breakfast while participating in Ward Council with the 4th Ward.  They have good people who are trying to be like Jesus.  I love working with them.  After their meeting I put the roast in the Crock Pot and then attended their 9 am Sacrament meeting.

Our Self-Reliance meeting is coming up in just under 2 weeks, and it feels like things are starting to come together for that.  I am hopeful this will go well and make a difference for people.

Pres. Tangren's family is quarantining because two members of the family have tested positive for COVID.  We decorated a "Get Well Soon" banner and took it to them with a loaf of fresh bread and tomatoes from the garden.  I just left it on the porch, rang the bell, and left.  Bummer.

After the sacrament at home this afternoon I fell asleep sitting up on the couch.  I took Nathaniel upstairs to be his nap buddy, but only one of us fell asleep.  I slept a little over two hours.  I dislike sleeping that long on a Sunday, but I was so exhausted.

Tonight we went to dad and mom's for a Grandpa Fry memory evening.  He passed away one year ago tomorrow.  I am glad we made so many trips to Bremerton to visit him and that we made so many good memories.  I also can't believe it's been a year since we went for his funeral.  We enjoyed pie and ice cream and sitting in the back yard to visit.  The temps tonight were delightful.

Thankful: I'm grateful for naps and the enjoyable time we had in the back yard at dad and mom's.

Ministering: It was nice to take something to the Tangren's today.

Saturday's are great

Saturday, August 29, 2020
10:23 pm

Busy, good Saturday.  Started at Neil's soccer game while Spencer went to Isaac's game with G&G.  Sadly, Julie and the little girls never made it.  When I got home Emma was in her bed in trouble.  She had been there for two hours and had to stay there until lunch.  She mentioned a couple times that she doesn't want to do this again.  I hope she learned her lesson.  Neil lost his game 1-2 but he played well.  Isaac's team clobbered their opponent.

We folded a LOT of laundry today, finished installing the ramp to the nesting box in the chicken coop, and washed the van in the evening.  I hoped to make salsa with tomatoes from our garden, but never made it to that today.

Thankful: I'm thankful that I can buy groceries when I need to.  Tonight Spencer and I went to Ream's.  Meat was on sale, so we got four beef roasts and two pork roasts.  I love that I can do that.

Ministering: I texted Evan to let him know that we have some Scout uniforms that we can donate to his uniform bank.

Tofu for lunch

Dear Jessie and Mark,
We brought lunch in for my staff today because tomorrow is Stacy's birthday.  I decided I'm not a huge fan of udon noodles with tofu.  I think next time I'll try pad thai.
I love you both and hope you have a great day!
Love,
Dad

9:08 pm

I didn't fall asleep while reading scriptures to the kids.  That was an accomplishment.  Tomorrow is Stacy's birthday so I made banana muffins today to take to work to celebrate.  They were amazingly good.  I love sharing good food.  I spent about a half hour this morning working with someone from another credit union teaching her how we use an Excel workbook to comply with Utah's abandoned property laws.  It's quite a process we've built, and she was impressed.  I shared with her all the resources we created and hope it is helpful.

I also reviewed some furniture options for our new branch with someone from a company that does office furniture.  The architect has great taste in design, but he likes expensive stuff.  I had to scale back the budget for our furniture, explaining that I am not spending my own money from a company I own.  The money I'm spending belongs to my members; I am just a steward.  I think she understood that and can help get us furniture that is more appropriate to our needs.

Tonight I fed Nathaniel cereal and helped Abbie with some physics homework.  I haven't done physics since I was a Junior in high school.  We're having to learn it together.  Read scriptures and Wild Robot Escapes to the kids.  Now I'm going to put PJ's on and go to sleep.  I'm exhausted.

Thankful: I'm thankful that yesterday's blood drive was successful.  We got 42 units of blood, one short of the goal to collect 43.  That's eight more than we got last time.  I feel good about that.

Ministering: I ministered today to my credit union colleague.

Just some photos

Dear Mark, thanks for the email today. We pray for you.
Board meeting was today and it was good. Ran Spencer and Neil to soccer practice. Had FHE. Sorry we couldn't connect for a chat. Read scriptures, now off to sleep. No photos today, but here are a couple from the weekend. Love you!

The day I wore mismatched socks

Dear Mark,
Today was full.  I started in High Council meeting this morning, then joined the EQ presidency in the 4th ward for their meeting.  They are good men who are doing good work in their ward.  I felt good about being there because I offered a suggestion related to how they would conduct their ministering interviews.  My thought led to an idea that will help them in their interviews.  That was gratifying.
I came home and got our pork roast in the crock pot.  Today's dinner had a secret ingredient - pineapple juice in place of apple juice.  It was very tasty.  I also made roasted veggies so Jessie could have something in place of mashed potatoes.  I forget how much I love those roasted vegetables.  They are amazing.
During dinner tonight we watched the Come and See event from Jessie's mission.  I am always impressed by the quality of their events.  After the fireside they ran some "commercials" the missionaries did.  There is an amazing amount of talent..  The kids watched their favorite commercial a couple extra times.
This afternoon Spencer and I made a ministering visit to Erik Watkins.  It was a good visit.  He is getting ready to start at BYU in the fall, about the same time I will be working on the Self-Reliance program.  We agreed to be "accountability partners" for each other.  I'll follow up on his schooling, he'll check with me on my progress in the "Building your business" session.  I hope it will help us both.
I worked on the stake financial audit this afternoon.  The Church has started implementing all the technology changes I wished for when I was in the Bishopric - scanning receipts, paying reimbursements via direct deposit, logging authorizations electronically.  Maybe some day I'll be called as a financial clerk. ðŸ˜‡
Tonight I gave Neil and Camilla the last of the father's blessings at the start of the school year.  Sadly, Emma doesn't want one again.  I think she is embarrassed by them.  So I pray for her, but I hope to help her become more comfortable asking for and receiving these blessings.
I can't believe we get to talk to you again tomorrow.  Time goes fast, and these new mission rules make the weeks seem to go even faster.  The kids prayed for your friend who agreed to come to church with you, and we all thanked God for your kind neighbor.
Thankful: Tonight I'm thankful for flourless peanut butter chocolate cookies.  Jessie made them for us, and they gave me hope for all the people in the world who can't eat gluten.  Those cookies are a golden delicacy of hope to anyone in need of a pick-me-up, regardless of your gluten profile.
Ministering: It felt good to minister to Erik today.  We all have challenges.  Some are "not fair."  I can be empathetic, non-judgmental, and loving, regardless of what others face.
More later...

PS - While getting dressed this morning I discovered that my black socks were mismatched, but that fact was impossible to discover unless you were the one wearing them.  So, I cheerfully wore my mismatched socks and had a successful day.  That's about as rebellious as I get! ðŸ˜Ž

The neighborhood honeybees really like our sunflowers!

We had several musical numbers today.  Not this photo, but earlier Jessie was playing the musical number she played last month for her mission fireside, with Abbie playing one part on her violin and Spencer playing another on his clarinet.  It was delightful.

Hello Mark, it's too late to write in my journal in my laptop battery is nearly dead. Here are some photos of today with a better letter coming soon.

Getting stuff done

Dear Mark,
I went with Abbie to school this morning to talk to the counselor Ms. Terry about switching out of AP English.  She can handle the class, but not the books they have to read.  I am hopeful that regular English 11 will be a less traumatic experience.
Work today was productive.  I finished getting ready for Board meeting on Monday.
Jessie is responsible for good food.  She made us zucchini pasta for dinner and it was delicious.  For dessert I had had apple crumb cake that she made on Wednesday.  She didn't make the ice cream that went with the cake.  She also made some salsa with the tomatoes from our garden.  All fantastic.
After dinner we went outside with Nathaniel.  He enjoyed sitting in the grass for a while.  I played a variation of Hobbes ball with Neil and Isaac.  I threw the balls and they tried to intercept them with sticks.  No one got bonked and it was a lot of fun.
Thankful: I'm thankful I can go to sleep.  I'm exhausted.
Ministering: I ministered to Abbie at school today.
Love,
Dad

Progress

Dear Mark,
I remember what I was going to mention the other day - I took the kids to Maple Ridge to meet their teachers and get ready for the new school year.  It was fun to be there.  It sounds like the Watchdog program that I've done the past several years won't happen this year because of COVID, so I put my name down on the signup sheet to see if I can get in a couple times during the year to help.
Today was productive.  I updated some policies and documented the things we learned from COVID on how we can ensure our business will carry through unexpected interruptions.  Sounds thrilling, I know.  But it needed to be done, and feels good to have it finished.
I took a walk at lunch today.  I'm amazed at how much construction is going on around here.  I need to find a more peaceful walking route!
Tonight I read a bit of our next chapter book to the kids, The Wild Robot Escapes.  I guess the title gives away the ending, huh?
Thankful: I'm thankful for the miracle of our bodies and our minds.  The kids are learning at school.  Nathaniel eats good food and grows and is getting faster at scooting across the floor.  Small miracles.
Ministering: I texted a couple of people today and dropped off some fresh bread this morning at Robert Kincaid's house.  Then I found out he's on his way to Washington.  Need to go back and pick up the loaf of bread and distribute it elsewhere.
Many people have asked about you and send their love.  So do I!
Love,
Dad

Nathaniel and I had fun talking together while running some errands.

First day of school

Dear Mark,
Quick report to make up for last night.  We planned to meet Jessie at the baggage claim in the airport, but when we got there we were directed to the 2nd floor of the parking structure and told that all missionaries come out there.  So we went there and waited... and waited... and waited with other missionary parents.  After all the other missionaries arrived without Jessie, we finally braved the wrath of the airport bouncers.  A very nice security guy paged for her and found her waiting at baggage claim where we planned to meet... but they wouldn't let us in there and apparently no one noticed her name tag to realize that she should be directed to the 2nd floor of the parking structure.  Fortunately it all ended well, but it was hardly the welcome we wanted to give.
Today my newest employee started.  She served her mission in the Argentina Resistencia mission.
Last night we had our credit union annual meeting.  No pancakes, no prizes, and almost no attendees.  Last year we had over 300 in attendance.  Last night we had 19.  That was enough to meet our minimum requirement of 15, so good enough.
After work today I went to Bro. Knowles to help put in a drip irrigation system in his backyard landscaping project.  That felt nice.  Then I went to the Stake Center to do the stake financial audit while Jessie met w/ Pres. Brinkerhoff.  The financial audit part got delayed until Sunday, but I was glad to visit with some other members of the stake leadership while Jessie visited with Pres. B.
Something else good happened in the last day or two that I meant to write about, but I can't remember what it was.  And I need to go to sleep, so I'll sign off for tonight.
Much love!
Dad

The only picture I remembered to take on the first day of school.  Love the shirt!

We finished our book!

Dear Jessie and Mark,
Today was a much better start to the week than last Monday.  I made progress on a couple projects at work and wrote the "script" for the annual meeting tomorrow evening.  No pancakes, no prizes, just talking.  I have no idea how many people we will have there, but all I need are 15 people to meet our minimum requirement.
After work I gave father's blessings to Abbie, Spencer and Isaac.  Neil wants his tomorrow, and Emma doesn't think she wants one.  Sometimes I wonder about that child...
This evening Abbie was the chauffeur and took Spencer and Neil to and from soccer practice.  It was so nice to have her willingly take care of that.
This evening we finished reading Wild Robot.  The ending of this book leads directly into the first chapter of the next book, which we will start tomorrow.
Thankful: I am thankful for green grass.  We played bocci ball for FHE tonight, and it was nice to play on the front lawn.
Ministering: Today I ministered to a colleague at another credit union (maybe in Texas?) who is on our same computer system.  We met virtually when she had a question a few years ago, and she had some more questions that I could help her with.  People helping people; that's what it's all about.
I love you both!
Love,
Dad

Isaac took a turn reading to the girls.  Very fun!

Addendum

With my new format, I forgot to include my customary ending!
Thankful: I am thankful for the blessing of fasting.  Yesterday was a bit chaotic in the evening, and so I never actually had dinner.  I finished the evening with two pieces of toast and tomato just before midnight, and began my fast then.  I think the Lord understood my circumstances and accepted my shortened fast.  Today just felt good.  On days I fast I often think of Alma 17:3.  Frequent fasting has been a blessing in my life.
Ministering: Spencer and I made ministering visits to the Osborn's and Robinson's this afternoon.  It was among the first time we've made official ministering visits in a long time, and was nice to do.
Okay, now I'm done.  Love to all!

Happy Sunday

Dear Jessie and Mark,
I'm going to change how I send my daily message.  Instead of writing in my journal, then copying and pasting it into an email, I'll send you an email, then copy that into my journal.  That way I am less likely to send something to you that I meant to edit out.  (Shocking disclosure - there is more to my journal than you get!)
Today was really nice.  I was up until 1:00 am this morning taking care of Nathaniel.  I decided to sleep in and not attend the Fourth Ward Council meeting.  That was a good decision.
We attended church at noon and it was so nice.  I really enjoy gathering with other Church members.  A newly married couple that recently moved into our ward, the Zoebell's, spoke in Church.  Madelyn shared an idea in a way I had never thought of before.  We are a Church of getherers.  We gather together to partake of the sacrament and worship God.  We strengthen each other as we gather.  And we engage in missionary work to gather scattered Israel on this side of the veil, and we do temple work to gather scattered Israel on the other side.  Gathering and togetherness is an integral part of God's plan for his children.
I met with Pres. Florence this afternoon.  I am so impressed by the work our Stake Presidency does and the time they devote.  They are amazing men.  I want to fulfill my calling in a way that takes some of the load off them.
We had a virtual Self-Reliance committee meeting this afternoon to discuss the upcoming Self-Reliance classes we are going to start in September.  I think things are progressing, and we feel good about our plans.  The meeting took 13 minutes.  No one complained about that!
Mom planned some fun activities for the family this afternoon.  We played something similar to Hit or Miss, where each person tried to think of a gospel person or event related to a specific word.  The goal was to think of one person or event that many people would think of, and one that no one else would list.  Then we talked about the things we discussed.  The funniest part was when the word was "short."  We all thought of Zaccheus.
Dinner was ... you guessed it, amazing.  Last week Emma ate too much and had to lie down.  Tonight it was mom that overdid it.  I offered to smoke salmon next week so she wouldn't overeat! :)
We are finishing our bedtime story called The Wild Robot.  The book is quite enjoyable.  It is due back at the library tomorrow, but we still have almost 50 pages to go.  We are just getting to the climax, so tomorrow we are going to have a reading marathon.
Mark, will you please check your garment tops?  I have two shirts that I am sure are yours, but Mom said you counted and have as many as you are supposed to have.  If you need these, I'll mail them to you.  Otherwise I'll put them away until you get home.
Jessie, your new bluetooth keyboard should arrive at the mission office tomorrow.  Amazon sent me confirmation that it had been "dispatched."  I guess that is the Canadian version of "shipped."  I didn't know I could speak Canadian! :)
Love you both, and hope you have a wonderful day.
Dad

A success story from yesterday.  I gathered all the tools needed to remove the stuck tub drain stopper, hoping it would take only 20 minutes to complete:

And fifteen minutes later, the project was done!  No additional trips to the hardware store needed!  Miracles never cease!  This is the old drain successfully removed, with the magic tool on the left.

10:07 pm

No journal entry last night because Spencer, Emma and Camilla spent the night at Dad and Mom's house.  With only Neil and Isaac going to bed, they didn't need me to sit outside their door, and my normal journal writing routine got messed up.  Instead, we played catch outside in the back yard while Nathaniel sat on a blanket and enjoyed the evening.  Julie and Abbie worked on a card in Julie's craft room.

At work yesterday we finished our interviews for our new teller position and extended an offer to Aspen.  She accepted and starts on Wednesday.  It felt like I was really not very effective this past week at getting things done.  Too much time got diverted from making progress on the things I wanted to focus on.  Instead there were too many urgent items, some of them important, but not all, that took my time.  Next week has to be better.

Today was productive and fun.  We started with banana muffins served on the back deck with fresh peaches.  Then I replaced the chicken wire that had been broken down so now the chickens don't have the run of the entire back yard.  They are again confined to the animal domain.

After that was done, Spencer, Neil, Isaac and I joined Dad and went to Bret VanAusdal's cabin in Fairview Canyon.  He has more firewood than he wants and is trying to clear it off his property.  It is already cut and split.  We loaded a pickup truck full.  The drive there took just over an hour, and loading the truck took about 15 minutes.  Then Bret invited us to ride in their side-by-sides on a loop along Skyline Drive.  It was really beautiful.  Bret and Dad rode in the two-seater, and I went with the three boys in the bigger one.  Spencer got to drive for part of the time and loved it.  Then we had lunch with them and came back home.  I expected we would be back at 1:00, but it was closer to 5:00 when we returned.  And our woodpile now is so full I can't close the gate to it anymore.  I think we have 450 cubic feet of firewood.

After a standing dinner of whatever you could grab, we went to Dad and Mom's to celebrate Grandma Fry's 99th birthday with a chocolate pudding dessert that was quite tasty.  When our girls got full, I finished theirs too.  Three servings was probably more than I should have eaten, but someone had to sacrifice.  😉

Thankful: I am thankful we had such a fun day together today and that we were safe.

Ministering: First thing this morning I worked on an email for the Self-Reliance program.  I need to finish it tonight and send it off.

Red things from the garden

Dear Jessie and Mark,
I need to rock Nathaniel to sleep, so I'm sending this journal entry with little additional notes.  Other than to say how much I love you and hope you are doing great.
Love,
Dad

9:03 pm

May I start this journal entry by saying how angry I feel at crooks, thieves and swindlers?  We discovered some fraud at the credit union today, but not before our member had lost $8,000.  And why?  Because our member he gave his online banking user ID and password to someone who said they could help him earn some easy money.  I'm not sure which feeling is stronger – anger at the crooks for being so selfish and dishonest, or disbelief at my member that anyone could be so foolish as to give out their online banking credentials.  Aaaurrrgh!

In other news, I love having toast and tomatoes for lunch every day.  I supplemented with fresh strawberries from our garden in yogurt.  If I could really get good at gardening, I might be tempted to become a vegetarian!  (Small chance of that happening in this life!)

Before dinner I went on a short walk with Isaac, Emma, Camilla and Nathaniel.  We talked with Bro. and Sis. Knowles.  I gave some movie tickets to the Bates tonight to thank them for being so kind to our children, and asked for a couple zucchini from their garden to go in our chicken noodle soup.  The soup was amazing.  After dinner I gave Nathaniel a bath.  I worked on a stake blood drive today.  I still need to prepare an email letting people know about an upcoming Self-Reliance program.

Thankful: I'm thankful that my irritations and problems are generally limited to dealing with others' problems, like my member losing $8k.  As frustrating as that problem is, it's not life and death.  No one's eternal salvation is at stake (well, maybe the swindler, but he is not in my circle of concern or influence).  And my family is healthy and secure.

Ministering: Bates and Knowles.  See above.

Writing to TWO missionaries

Dear Jessie and Mark,
What a treat it is to have two missionaries to write to each night.  I'm so excited!
Thank you Jessie for the email this evening.  I loved reading it.  Sorry I missed much of the video chat this afternoon; there was lots going on today at work.  I'll get more details from the kids and Mom.
Mark, I tracked your flight on my computer at the office until you landed.  Thanks for the texts; so glad to know you made it safely.  We look forward to hearing all about your area, companion, etc. when you have time to write or talk.
Have a great day tomorrow!
Love,
Dad

We got Mark to the airport on time this morning and saw him off to begin his service in Austin, Texas.  We enjoyed pumpkin and apple pie that Abbie made last night in honor of Mark's departure.  He ate some, but was too nervous to eat a "normal" breakfast.  He read us the last chapter of Bunnicula on the drive.  Listening to Mark read while we drive has become a family tradition.  At the airport we took a few final teary photos, then Julie drove a lap around the airport while went in with Mark to check his luggage and get him to the security checkpoint.  Everything went smoothly and he sent us a text message from Austin that he is there and with his companion Elder Roundy.  We love and pray for them both.

We also had a nice visit with Jessie.  I wasn't able to join for the entire call and had to mute it a couple times to deal with stuff at work, but I enjoyed what I was there for.  She looked happy, and I enjoyed the email I got from her this evening.

We had corn on the cob for dinner, and I added toast and tomato.  It was better than good.  I love fresh, delicious, healthy food.  Then after we cycled the dishes I played Chronology with Neil and Isaac.  Isaac wanted to do something outside, so we played it on the lawn.  That's not necessarily the most convenient place to play a game with cards, but the temp was perfect and it was very pleasant.

Thankful: I am so grateful for the gospel and to have two missionaries serving the Lord.  I hope to follow their example and serve the Lord and my fellow brothers and sisters.

Ministering: I ministered to a credit union member today by listening to him.  He's made some pretty serious mistakes that he is trying to work through.  I think he feels good talking to someone about it.  I am amazed by the power of the Atonement to cleanse from sin and compensate for the hurt we cause others.  Truly we should never treat that blessing lightly or assume that the healing we and others need will come easily.  It required the infinite sacrifice of Jesus Christ; we should not expect that change to require anything less than everything we can offer.

Tomatoes, tacos and tears

Hi Jessie,
It's been a good day today, with a few tears as we prepare for Mark's departure in the morning.  We'll probably have lots more tears tomorrow.
I hope to be able to join the video chat with you tomorrow afternoon.  I've got a couple meetings in the afternoon, but should be able to break away for at least some of it.  I'll watch for your Hangouts message when you will be available.
We all love you lots, are proud of you, and thankful for your service.
Love,
Dad

9:40 pm

Mark's big day is almost here.  Tonight he was set apart (again) by Pres. Brinkerhoff as a missionary.  Tomorrow morning we will all drive to the airport to drop him off for his flight to Austin, Texas.  Although his MTC experience was unusual and not what he planned on, it was delightful having him complete his missionary training in our basement.  And the last six or seven weeks since he was released have just been wonderful.

One item from Mark's setting apart caught my attention.  He was blessed with the gift of prophecy and revelation.  That is an exact phrase from my patriarchal blessing.  Other things I remember:

·       He will have experiences that he will recognize as the reason why he is serving in Texas.

·       He will continue to repent and draw closer to the Savior.

·       He will build a good relationship with his companions.

·       His tongue will be loosed and he will be able to speak to others about the Savior.

There was lots more, but that is all I can recall at the moment.

Lunch today was amazing.  I had a small serving of the zucchini chicken that Abbie made on Sunday afternoon, along with two delicious pieces of toast with fresh tomato from the garden.  As I finished I thought about how great my lunch was.  I am so fortunate to have good food each day.

Speaking of good food, after Mark's setting apart, those family members who could came to the house for dinner and dessert.  The tacos were fabulous – no surprise there.  Then we got out ice cream with a variety of toppings and enjoyed an ice cream bar.  We went through almost an entire gallon.  We enjoyed visiting with each other for a while.  Kyle brought Sophia and I really enjoyed visiting with him.  He is not currently actively participating in Church and did not stand in the circle while Mark was set apart, but visiting with him was very nice.

It's interesting how we all grow and change.  Ten years ago Kyle was a teenager and we didn't have as much in common.  Now he's an adult.  He's a father.  He's working on a career and providing for his family.  In so many ways we are similar (although I can't grow a moustache that looks as good as his!)  It was fun to just spend time with him and enjoy a more peer-relationship.  I appreciate that that same type of growth and maturity can develop in my relationship with my children.  As they grow and develop, we don't lose the relationship with our little children; it becomes more enriched as their understanding and capacity increases.  I suspect this is an essential part of and reason for God's plan of salvation.

Okay, enough philosophy for tonight.

Thankful: Everything mentioned above.

Ministering: I talked to Mike a bit on my way home from work today.  And I just tried to be a good person and kind to everyone I interacted with.

Family photo day

Hi Jessie,
This afternoon we took family photos. There were some real gems!  I'll let mom curate and send you some of the best.  I hope you had a great sabbath today and look forward to visiting later this week!

Dad

10:05 pm

It was a good day today.  I started with High Council meeting.  Matt Williams was released from the High Council today and called as the new Bishop of the 2nd ward.  He was called to the High Council after I was, and almost immediately everything was messed up by COVID so we never had much of a chance to work together.  I feel a little cheated by that.  He has a great spirit about him and I would like to get to know him better and work with him.

I attended sacrament meeting with the Fourth ward today.  It was nice.  Talks were on remaining centered in Christ.  One of the ideas that will help us do that included choosing good friends.  I am grateful that I am able to surround myself with good people.  I count my children among my friends, and am grateful that they also choose to surround themselves with good people.

We had the sacrament at home today, then I went to a Self-Reliance Committee meeting.  We are really trying to figure out how to make this program a blessing to the members of our Stake.  I really appreciated the perspectives and ideas shared by the other members of the committee.  They are good Christlike people.

Before dinner we went to BYU to find a grassy, shady place to take family pictures before Mark leaves for Texas on Wednesday.  It took about 90 minutes, but I think we were able to get at least one good group photo as well as individual shots of each of the kids.

Looking at the calendar, my week is really filling up fast.  I'd better get to sleep soon so I can be ready to go tomorrow morning.

Thankful: I'm thankful for fasting.  My fast today felt good.
Ministering: I sent an email to Bishop Williams thanking him for his service and expressing my confidence in him.

Spencer was totally exhausted when we were done with our photos!

Love a clean house

Dear Jessie,
Today was really nice. I hope your day was too.  We saw Robin Escotto tonight at a wedding reception.  She looked up your Facebook page and was really impressed with your beautiful artwork.  I love you!
Love,
Dad

9:27 pm

Saturday's go so fast!  We did quite a lot of work – weeded the garden, helped Abbie trim goat hooves, chores around the house – and still ran out of day before we ran out of projects.  I cleaned the porch lights and they look much better.  I think they're kind of ugly and would like to replace them, but I'm not sure it's worth the expense.  Maybe they'll break…

Tonight we went to Alvin Larsen's wedding reception.  He married Victoria Roper who lived in our last ward.  Small world.  We got there about five minutes before it "ended," and Alvin and Victoria were just getting ready to leave.  We visited with the Escottos from the SF 17th Ward.  We seem to see them at many receptions.

Thankful: I'm thankful we can clean our house.  It takes a lot of consistent work, but is so worth it.

Ministering: I texted Scott to arrange to help him lay sod in his back yard on Monday.

Playing Quirkle last night.  Abbie won.

Helping Abbie tend to her goats.  My job was to feed them weeds and keep them happy while she trimmed hooves.

Still sore

Dear Jessie,
I hope your day was nice.  My soreness from the hike has moved from hips and shoulders to my right calf.  Strange.  In another day or two I expect to be back to normal.
Much love,
Dad

9:25 pm

Ugh, it took me until noon today to get caught up on the emails etc. that built up in just three days out of the office.  I think I got through everything and either finished it or scheduled it.

After dinner Mark, Abbie and I went to the high school to watch Spencer's marching band show off what they have accomplished during this week of band camp.  They did a nice job and it was fun to watch them.  Several students who knew Mark were super excited to see him.  It is so weird having a celebrity for a son! 😊

Thankful: I am grateful that having purpose feels good.  The first part of today was less rewarding as I felt like I was slogging through lots of emails and items that were busy and possibly urgent, but not necessarily important.  The afternoon felt lots better.

Ministering: I sent a happy birthday text to Scott Dunn today.

Did I share this photo of Emma after she lost a tooth last week?

God watches over us

This vacation has been a series of mishaps. Fortunately all is well thanks to the goodness of God. More details to come. Photos not in order.
