First, a journal entry from last night:
Got to work this morning and almost immediately noticed telltale problems with my vision. Migraine. Came back home and went to sleep. Got a blessing. Took three two-hour naps today. Feeling better now but still have a headache and still tired. Going to sleep now. Better journal entry tomorrow.
Yep, that was yesterday. Bummer of a day.
Today was better. My head was still tender for parts of the day, but it got better as the day went on. Started with scripture study on the couch with Isaac. Then went downstairs to work from home before taking Abbie to the oral surgeon to have her wisdom teeth taken out. She was a little anxious when she was coming out of the anesthesia. She was worried about where Emma was, why there were three of me, and who was taking care of her goats. I finally put my air pods in and turned on some classical music to help calm her down. That helped a lot.
On the drive home Abbie was really funny. She was talking about multiplying negative numbers and the fact that she couldn't stop talking even though she was only working on half a brain. She wanted to talk about fusion in stars, how fruits and vegetables are metabolized, and corrected me when I said that she was doing "just peachy." "I'm not a peach Dad; I'm a person." Yes, and a very funny one at that.
There was a bad accident outside our subdivision this morning. It took all morning to investigate and clean up. I haven't heard, but hope there was not a fatality there.
Had a frustrating experience that I chose to laugh about. I needed eighty $1.20 stamps for work. I stopped at the Post Office to buy them, but the line looked long. No problem – their self-service kiosk dispenses this denomination. I swiped my card and expected it to spit out eight sheets of stamps. Nope; it individually printed all eighty stamps…one…at…a…time…taking…five…seconds…between…each…stamp. Oh brother. But I finally got what I needed, so that's good, right?
The big news today is that Mark received his missionary reassignment today. He will finish the MTC at the end of June, then will be released until August 5 when he will begin his service in Austin, Texas. He's so excited, especially to have some certainty for what his next step is. We are waiting to learn more about whether this will be a Spanish-language assignment or not, and if/when he will learn how temporary or permanent this assignment is.
None of us knows how long he will serve in Austin. It might be for a few weeks, or many months, or nearly two years. The Lord doesn't seem terribly interested in having us looking to the future for how we think we might serve, or pondering on how we anticipated serving, and especially not wishing we were serving in some other way.
D&C 51:16-17 comes to my mind from a BYU devotional address some time ago:
16 And I consecrate unto them this land for a little season, until I, the Lord, shall provide for them otherwise, and command them to go hence;
17 And the hour and the day is not given unto them, wherefore let them act upon this land as for years, and this shall turn unto them for their good.
When we don't know how long a circumstance will last, we should act "as for years," doing the very best we can to reap current blessings while also preparing for a long and glorious future. I try to focus on this premise in my Church service – wherever it is – and hope Mark will do the same, whether that be in our basement, in Austin, Argentina, or anywhere else.
Thankful: I'm thankful for modern medicine. Wisdom teeth removals are relatively simple and typically involve only temporary discomfort. We are so blessed to live when and where we do.
Ministering: Today I ministered to my precious Abbie. She is doing very well, wisely sleeping as much as possible. And yesterday I was the recipient of ministering due to my migraine.
More later…
Let the fun begin!
